Kit Migration Checklist: Import Subscribers, Rebuild Automations, and Test Before Cutover
Moving to Kit is less about finding a magic “migrate” button and more about not dropping consent, tags, forms, or automations on the floor. This checklist is stack-agnostic: it works whether you are leaving Mailchimp, Beehiiv, or another ESP — and it pairs with our source-specific guides instead of replacing them. Themes: import subscribers, rebuild automations, and test before cutover.
For creator operators with an existing list and capture surface. Not a weekend-miracle story. Not a coupon page. Where Kit docs are explicit we cite them; where Free-UI or your outcomes are unmeasured we label UNKNOWN / REQUIRES VALIDATION.
Live companions (pick the one that matches your starting platform; claims in one article do not prove the other): Mailchimp → Kit Migration Teardown · Beehiiv → Kit Migration Teardown. See Methodology.
Who this checklist is for
Built for operators who already have subscribers plus signup/automation surfaces and want a reusable pre-flight list before cutting over to Kit.
Not built for viral-tips seekers, coupon hunters, or anyone who needs first-hand UI guarantees this docs-based article cannot provide. Authentic Kit Free screenshots: UNKNOWN this publish.
Phase 0 — Decide stay vs switch
Do not checklist yourself into a bad migration. If your current ESP still fits team muscle memory — or your product is a newsletter publication experience another stack still wins at — staying can be rational (Inference).
For fuller stay-vs-switch checkpoints, use the decision sections in our live Mailchimp → Kit and Beehiiv → Kit guides — pick the one that matches your starting platform. Do not invent outcomes from a guide written for a different source.
Pre-import — Export hygiene (source ESP)
Export hygiene is preparation for import — not a claim that CSV is the default Kit path. Kit documents dedicated providers first; see the Import section below.
- Export contacts as your source allows (email required; names/tags/custom fields as available).
- Export or separately suppress unsubscribed / cleaned / non-subscribed sets — exact controls REQUIRES VALIDATION against your source ESP help the day you run.
- Snapshot forms, segments, and automation diagrams (notes/screenshots). That is evidence for rebuild — not a promise that Kit clones them.
- Prefer a small dry-run before the full subscribed set (small CSV or a limited dedicated-importer test when your source supports it).
Source-specific export and migration docs differ. Use the companion that matches your stack:

- Mailchimp starters: Mailchimp → Kit Migration Teardown plus Kit’s Migrating from Mailchimp to Kit

Kit account & plan honesty
Confirm the plan you will actually use against kit.com/pricing and Kit help — do not blur Free browse with paid CREATE.
Per The Kit Free plan (retrieved 2026-09-25 PT): Free includes up to 10,000 subscribers, unlimited forms/landing pages, unlimited broadcasts, tagging/segmentation, and related list-growth features; visual automations, email sequences, and several other items are listed under Creator / Creator Pro, with browse + upgrade-prompt behavior when creating. Which SKU a new signup shows today REQUIRES VALIDATION at account-creation time.
Creator vs Creator Pro: Creator vs Pro: choose the right plan (retrieved 2026-09-25 PT; soft redirects OK — re-check live). Interactive pricing widget floors vs static help: REQUIRES VALIDATION / UNKNOWN until you view them yourself.
Kit’s migration marketing describes free migration help if you sign up for a paid plan — that eligibility is paid-plan only, not an unconditional free concierge for every account. See kit.com/migrations and the overall migration hub above.
Import subscribers
Primary authority for how to bring subscribers in: Kit’s How to import a subscriber list (retrieved 2026-09-25 PT). Kit documents dedicated importers for ActiveCampaign, Beehiiv, GetResponse, Keap, Mailchimp, and Drip. Use a dedicated importer when Kit lists your source. Use CSV when there is no dedicated importer for your source, or when you choose CSV.
Overall migration sequence (account setup → import → rebuild → test): Migrating to Kit from another platform. Import FAQs: Importing subscribers: what to know + FAQs (both retrieved 2026-09-25 PT).
Platform companions (cite where relevant; not the sole basis for general claims):
- Beehiiv: Migrating from Beehiiv to Kit + our live Beehiiv guide
- Mailchimp: Migrating from Mailchimp to Kit + our live Mailchimp guide
Do not treat Beehiiv-only or Mailchimp-only importer behavior as universal for every ESP.
Checklist:
- Prefer a dedicated importer when Kit lists your source; otherwise CSV field-map carefully.
- Watch blank-overwrite / merge behavior per Kit import docs (Docs-based pattern — your file edge cases UNKNOWN without dry-run).
- Import into a Tag unless you have a specific reason to use a Form or Sequence (FAQ guidance).
- Pause Visual Automations / Rules that would fire on import until you are ready to test.
- Do not treat import success as “automations migrated.”
Rebuild — tags, forms, automations
Subscriber import is not a clone of your old ESP. Kit’s overall migration guide frames a rebuild-oriented path after import (Migrating to Kit from another platform, retrieved 2026-09-25 PT).
Tags & segments
- Map source tags/groups/interests → Kit Tags before import fog sets in.
- Recreate dynamic segments as Kit Segments; conditions rarely 1:1 auto-clone across ESPs (Inference from Kit migration guides’ rebuild posture).
- Name tags for humans you will still understand in six months.
Forms & landing pages
- Rebuild capture in Kit; design parity with the old ESP is not promised.
- Replace site embeds/links only after the Kit form is published and test-submitted.
- Old embeds that still point at the abandoned ESP are a silent cutover failure mode.
Kit Free help states unlimited forms/landing pages on Free (retrieved 2026-09-25 PT). Builder UI screenshots: UNKNOWN.
Email sequences & visual automations
- Recreate welcome/nurture/commerce paths; test entry with a seed address.
- Plan-gate honesty: sequence/automation CREATE may require Creator / Creator Pro per Free plan help — verify live; do not assume CREATE on every $0 SKU (REQUIRES VALIDATION).
- Browse ≠ CREATE. Upgrade prompts are not a walkthrough we captured first-hand (UNKNOWN Free-UI CREATE).
These are official Kit URLs — not affiliate tracking links.
Commerce / paid / recommendations (if applicable)
- Paid-subscriber billing continuity often does not auto-migrate. Beehiiv-class Kit help is explicit about workarounds for that source; other sources REQUIRES VALIDATION against the matching Kit guide — do not generalize Beehiiv-specific paid notes to every ESP.
- Creator Network / referral / ad relationships are separate networks — expect recuration, not a clone.
- We do not invent revenue retention rates.
Deliverability caveats
Will inbox placement improve after migration? UNKNOWN without your measurement. Domain authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC), list hygiene, complaints, content, and receiving-provider reputation matter more than ESP brand alone.
- Plan warm-up and permission proof on the sending domain you will actually use.
- Pro deliverability reporting existing as a product feature ≠ your guaranteed inbox rates (Docs-based feature may exist · UNKNOWN your rates).
- Importing unengaged or non-consented addresses can hurt you on any ESP — clean before you move.
Test before cutover
- [ ] Import complete + sample subscriber QA
- [ ] Forms live on site; old ESP capture disabled
- [ ] Automations paused → tested with seed → enabled
- [ ] DNS/auth (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) verified for sending domain — REQUIRES VALIDATION against Kit DNS docs at cutover time
- [ ] Subscriber communication about the move (especially paid)
- [ ] Seed-list send reviewed before full broadcast
- [ ] Internal runbook updated (who owns tags/forms)
When not to use this checklist alone
Complex agency multi-brand journeys, active legal/compliance holds, or paid-billing continuity risk need specialist counsel beyond this utility page. If you only want an affiliate pitch, skip us.
